The star brand on the shoulder indicates this horse is property of the state of Texas. The state of Texas keeps a herd of about 2,000 horses. About 1,500 are used by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for the prisons. They are ridden by prison guards and also used to handle cattle which the prisons keep to help offset costs. Prisoners with good behavior get to train and care for the horses and work the cattle. The rest of the horses are used by mounted police or by state historical sites. This particular one was at the George Ranch Historical Park near Houston.
